Enhancing Learning Environments: The Role of Acoustic Consultancy in Schools

Red were involved from the outset in providing design guidance through an initial environmnetal impact assessment for St John Bosco School, a new educational building set within an existing residential area of Liverpool.

The building was innovatively designed, offering a large open plan portal frame. Within the structure, the school design created a mixture of cellular teaching spaces and open plan communal spaces. Double height teaching spaces and a raked open plan performance space afforded innovative and challenging solutions. Success depended on an experienced depth of knowledge and the innovative use of noise propagation modelling and facade mitigation.

Application of an in-depth, professional technical knowledge of building regulations and targets was essential to create a successful acoustic environment – in this case, Approved Document E, requirement E4 and BB93 for schools and assessment of performance spaces. Commissioning tests were undertaken at completion to verify compliance with target criterion.
